Rohde & Schwarz and AVL have intensified their collaboration with the integration of a Rohde & Schwarz radar test system into the AVL DRIVINGCUBE™ toolchain, creating new possibilities for testing radar enabled advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) features and validating autonomous driving functions with a vehicle-in-the-loop test bed. Now complex driving scenarios can be generated and tested in a safe and reproducible environment.
The validation of complex ADAS and automated driving (AD) functions such as emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and highway chauffeur in all possible driving scenarios and environmental conditions requires huge amounts of functional and non-functional validation and can be risky when conducted on roads. Additionally, the new challenges of AD means that conducting conventional real-world tests is often not feasible on roads. Instead, test methods are virtualized using an X-in-the-loop approach such as the AVL DRIVINGCUBE™.
The AVL DRIVINGCUBE™ combines both simulation and real vehicles on a chassis dynamometer and powertrain testbed. It provides a new way to speed up the validation and approval process of ADAS and AD systems. The key concept of this solution is operating the real vehicle in a virtual environment, taking into consideration all parts of the 'sense, plan, act' chain. Connecting the virtual environment to the real built-in sensors requires cutting-edge simulation technology. The conditions are completely different to those of an isolated sensor lab—particularly for test beds.
Following their work together on GNSS simulation, AVL and Rohde & Schwarz are now collaborating on radar target simulation on the AVL DRIVINGCUBE™.
The Rohde & Schwarz radar test system opens up a completely new range of possibilities for testing radar-enabled ADAS features and ensuring the safety of autonomous driving functions with vehicle-in-the-loop test beds. Innovative antenna array technology allows complex artificial objects to be generated for the radar sensors at variable distances and with variable radial velocity, size and azimuth – without physically moving antennas or devices. A responsive real-time interface and seamless integration into AVL's virtual testing toolchain allow even challenging, complex and risky driving scenarios to be generated and tested.
The system is fully future-proof thanks to a modular and scalable concept. This means that the same test bed can be used for tests of all types of vehicles with a different number of radar sensors and various sensor variants. The solution is used for the validation and application of adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist and other ADAS or AD functions. Furthermore, Euro NCAP scenarios can be validated in a reproducible and safe environment.
This strategic collaboration between AVL and Rohde & Schwarz represents a game changing solution for testing and validation of radar-enabled ADAS and AD.

Joseph Rohde was previously a veteran executive at Walt Disney Imagineering, the division of The Walt Disney Company that designs and builds Disney's theme parks and resort hotels. Rohde's formal title is Executive Designer and Vice President, Creative.
He was born in Sacramento, California and raised in Hawaii. He graduated from Chaminade College Preparatory, Canoga Park, Calif., in 1973, where he starred in student dramatic productions and was Class Salutatorian. Rohde received a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from Occidental College in Los Angeles.
Rohde's trademark is a large collection of earrings he wears in his left ear, all of which are souvenirs from decades of travel to remote corners of the world. This tradition began when he stuck his 5-year anniversary pin into his ear.[4]
Career at Walt Disney Imagineering[edit]
Rohde was the lead designer of Disney's Animal Kingdom,[5] one of four theme parks at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, and the principal creative force behind the park's Expedition Everest thrill ride, which debuted in 2006. He was one of the lead designers behind the Disney Vacation Club property Aulani in Oʻahu, Hawaii. He was chosen for the role because of his experience with the Island and its native people, having grown up in Hawaii.
Rohde joined Imagineering in 1980 during the development of Epcot as a model designer and scenic painter for the theme park's Mexico pavilion. He later worked as a designer on the refurbishment of Fantasyland at Disneyland, the Captain EO3-D film attraction starring singer Michael Jackson, the Norway pavilion at Epcot and the Adventurers Club, a 1930s-themed bar and lounge that opened in 1989 within the Pleasure Island entertainment district at Walt Disney World Resort.
Rohde was featured in an April 2006 Travel Channel documentary titled Expedition Everest: Journey to Sacred Lands. The program was produced by Discovery Networks during expeditions to China and Nepal in 2005 called Mission Himalayas. The treks were sponsored by Discovery, Disney, and Conservation International to promote the Expedition Everest theme park attraction and conduct scientific and cultural research in remote areas of the Himalayas. Rohde served as the model for Harrison Hightower, the owner of the fictional 'Hightower Hotel' which houses the Tower of Terror attraction at Tokyo DisneySea outside Tokyo, Japan.
After designing Aulani in Hawaii Rohde was tasked with creating Pandora – The World of Avatar at Disney's Animal Kingdom. The project took six years to complete and opened in May 2017.
Most recently, Rohde led the team that transformed the former Tower of Terror at Disney California Adventure into Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout!. The attraction opened in May 2017.[6][7] This new project is part of the expansion of his role as global creative leader of the Marvel property.[8]
On November 23, 2020, Rohde announced his retirement from Walt Disney Imagineering effective January 4, 2021.[9]
